“I had been interested in human rights all my life, but my activism began in a jail cell. After 12 years living in RI and 25 years without so much as a traffic ticket, an overzealous police officer violated the law numerous times to indict me with a barrage of fabricated charges because he didn’t like my attitude. A months-long battle in court continues, with details perjured, and illegally-acquired evidence accepted in Municipal Court.
In the cell, I wondered how unexpected the situation was… I was a friendly guy who’d always stayed out of trouble, someone who was comfortable chatting with most officers… yet here I was. I thought of how common this must be, how worse violations go unnoticed every day, but I knew the media cherrypicked cases to cover. Police abuses weren’t good news, or easily proven- and they ruffled feathers.
There was no one to speak up for me when they plastered my name, face, family’s address, and a false report that presumed my guilt on their social media and the local newspaper. There would be no one to speak out for the next person who it happened to, someone who may get it a whole lot worse. We needed a platform. In a jail cell, I resolved to create a platform, even if it was out of my own pocket, to give a place for underdogs to tell their story.
RICRU. Justice. Reform. Activism. More freedom for everyone.”
