Our country almost exclusively uses winner-take-all voting systems that encourage the dominance of the Republican and Democratic parties, while making it nearly impossible for independents and third parties like the Greens, Libertarians, Moderates, etc, to gain significant political power. This is in contrast to many European countries, where many parties hold parliamentary power simultaneously, better representing the diversity of constituents’ needs.
Proportional representation is a more reasonable alternative where the amount of seats gained is equal to the percentage of votes. If the electoral college were similarly replaced by popular vote, this would also remove a barrier between voters and elected officials.
Reform The Two-Party System Today!
Reform at every level of government is necessary to overhaul this dangerous, antiquated system. It has polarized the country into two extremes for decades- with compromise, alternative or seemingly extreme ideas barred from discourse. It can even have violent consequences as right- and left-wing groups clash, which is especially today. Millions of votes every year are literally thrown away because of the current system, including the electoral college.
This is something that we can all get behind. Even if you’re a Democrat or Republican, who would really say that those are the only choices we should ever have?
The ability of other parties to gain power and seats puts more control in the hands of normal people and decentralizes the power structure, preventing giant moneyed interests from buying all the politicians from one side of the aisle or the other. It can prevent the tragedy of always voting for “the lesser of two evils” and allows true parties of the people a shot at making real change.
RICRU advocates overhauling the local, state and national voting systems to make voting more sensible, open to third parties, and representative of the diversity of citizens’ needs and beliefs.
