Activists at a rally at the Providence statehouse were attacked on August 4th, 2018, including a surprise hammer attack on the back of the neck of veteran Samson Racioppi, and assaults on members of Resist Marxism and the destruction of their equipment by extremists from in and out of state as the police at first stood down. A large number of the counter-protesters stood with or identified as antifa, or operated in blac bloc manner, dressed anonymously in all-black guises.
Horse dung and other objects were caught on camera thrown at ralliers and police as the violence was eventually broken up, and the original peaceful ralliers were threatened by police to disperse their lawful assembly.
Photos were taken of the broken equipment by RICRU and posted below and in the original articles. We believe that regardless of your political opinions, you should be safe to speak your mind without fear. RICRU calls on citizens and officials to denounce politically-motivated violence (terrorism) in all forms, and for news agencies to cover such instances rigorously and factually.
We have limited updates regarding the two cases. The accused Providence Place Mall hammer-attacker is facing charges for felony assault with intent to cause bodily harm and disorderly conduct, but has been given leave to spend time in Florida. We wonder at the lenient charges and treatment of a potentially lethal attacker with previous political crimes on record.
We have no current update from ResistMarxism, but believe they were able to return to the statehouse on October 12th for a followup rally. We know of no additional incidents at this time.
